The original skull belonged to the Neanderthal ancestor Homo (sapiens) steinheimensis aged 25-35 years and was discovered in gravel in the vicinity of Steinheim in southern Germany in 1933. A Neanderthal precursor or early form of Homo sapiens. Found in a gravel pit near Steinheim on Murre, Germany Date of discovery: 1933 Age about 250,000 years.
